Christmas Comes Early to Dwyeropolis

We *may* have spent part of the day yesterday (when the ice giant Ymir visited Albany and bedecked the land with a frosty dollop, leaving us trapped inside, huddling together for warmth) unwrapping Christmas presents early. We did this because (a) it doesn’t make much sense to drag everything down with us to Rhode Island, where we’ll be spending “calendrical Christmas,” just to have to port it back with us; (b) Pru had already partially unwrapped most of the presents, anyway; and (c) I have very poor impulse control. Happy Birthday, Prudence!

We started the day with some fun present-unwrapping:

Then Dad went to work, and Mom and Pru had a fun day at home. When Dad was done at the office, we went to Alexi’s Diner, a local place that Pru likes and where the staff likes Pru. Dinner was nice, and when they found out that it was Pru’s birthday they gave her a little jello with a candle in it (and us a free slice of cake and coffee) and sang “Happy Birthday” (the copyrighted version, no less!) for her. Then we came home and gave the baby a small slice of the ice cream cake we’d been planning on giving her, which lead to the usual first birthday mess. Pictures will follow, probably tomorrow.

Halloween has come and gone, and Dwyeropolis is still laden-down with sweet, sweet candy. We may have slightly overestimated the number of trick-or-treaters who would brighten (or darken?) our lintel. And by “slightly”, I mean “by an order of magnitude”. So, the bleak loneliness of my existence has been laid bare. But on the plus side, more candy corn for me! I suppose that what you’re actually interested in is pictures of the Pru-bear in her Halloween costume, rather than my Werner Herzog-esque whining about the endless dissappointments that life brings our way. And so, without da further a-do: Live, from Queen Maud’s Land… Pru and Dad in their Halloween costumes. (I went as Judge Ralph Winter!) And our Jack ‘o Lantern: Holycraaaap! Strong Bad!

The Beagles Have Landed

We have arrived in Rensselaer. At the moment we’re just hanging out, waiting for the movers to catch up to us. Cal is very fond of having an almost entirely carpeted living space, though his feelings towards the two flights of stairs are somewhat more mixed (as mine will no doubt be soon, once you-know-who really gets crawling).

Ready to depart for Pru’s first ever-trip to Texas. It will be a three-way reunion: Sarah’s 10th high school reunion, a Horney family reunion, and my long-awaited reunion with Whataburger.

Red, White and Pru

Some Independence Day fun:

There was a street fair on Water Street from Broad Street (where we live, -ish) to the South Street Seaport. It had more of a Latin flavor (and not the ille, illa, illud kind) than most NYC street fairs, presumably because the guys who are usually hawking funnel-cake and giant mounds of curly fries were home celebrating the Fourth. Still, lack of giant mounds notwithstanding, we had a fairly good time. We shared a pretty tasty tamale and an “authentic” Venezuelan arepa (we passed on the “authentic” Columbian arepa, which is out of whack with our geopolitical views but was in keeping with the order in which we passed by the stands).

Of course, we also sampled delicious treats from the more northerly reaches of the former empire of Phillip II (unless you credit silly rumors that they were invented at the Minnesota State Fair):

That last one’s a fried oreo – probably also introduced at the Texas State Fair. (Phillip II for President!)

Last but not least, July 4 is the day on which we observe the birthday of our most dear friend, Calvin Coolidge, the Cat. His being a former stray, we don’t know his actual diem natalem, but since Independence Day was the real Calvin Coolidge’s birthday (happy 136th, big guy!) it seemed like the right day to go with. So yesterday we got him as a treat, some good tasting wet food (Fancy Feast) which he tore through in about a minute:

Superintendent Chalmers:		I thought we were having steamed clams.
Seymour Skinner:		Oh, no, I said steamed hams. That’s what I call hamburgers.
Superintendent Chalmers:		You call hamburgers steamed hams?
Seymour Skinner:		Yes, it’s a regional dialect.
Superintendent Chalmers:		Uh-huh. What region?
Seymour Skinner:		Uhh … Upstate New York.
Superintendent Chalmers:		Really? Well, I’m from Utica, and I’ve never heard anyone use the phrase ‘steamed hams.’
Seymour Skinner:		Oh, not in Utica. No, it’s an Albany expression.
Superintendent Chalmers:		I see.

Pru’s first attempt at eating solid foods:

Sweet potatoes are nutritious, palatable and extremely unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. The same is true of bananas, but bananas are so delicious that there’s a concern that if you start a baby off on bananas she’ll reject less sweet veggies, like, for example, sweet potatoes. So, we started with the sweet potatoes.

Victory! The spoon is in, the food is in: we are go for eating!

Final disposition of steamed and pureed sweet potatoes from first feeding: 95% still on container, 4% on bib, 1% in mouth. I’d call that a very successful first feeding.
